Love Your Bump

I loved being pregnant but there is no doubt that pregnancy comes with its' challenges ! The most common challenge is no doubt morning sickness. Although I did suffer from morning sickness during one of my pregnancies I did not during the other two - go figure. Ummmmm could this be because of the sex of the child - no, as I had three boys !

Another challenge is how to dress your growing bump. I went out and purchased a lot of maternity clothes during my first pregnancy (this was long before I started my own online maternity clothing store). This dilemma was, however the inspiration for starting my own maternity clothing business. I had the challenge of purchasing great looking maternity clothes on a pretty tight budget ....... hence the idea of providing quality maternity clothes with an affordable price tag. Lets face it , my husbands oversized tracky dacks and tee's did not cut it !

Now is a great time to be pregnant when it comes to maternity fashions as there is whole lot hot mamas sharing their individually adorable, and obtainable,  maternity style!  Take a look at the numerous online maternity clothing stores and maternity fashion blogs to get some inspiration on how to dress your bump........... but most of all love your bump and embrace your own, individual maternity style !

What Are Belly Bands?

Belly Bands are an essential wardrobe stable for any expecting mum. They are made from super soft and stretchy fabric, designed to be worn over the top of pants/skirt/jeans, you can’t do up anymore.

They look like a wide tube top or boob tube, specially designed to fit around a pregnant mother’s mid section. Belly bands are usually made from a combination of fibres such as cotton + elastane/spandex or lycra. They have to be stretchy in order to stay up and on and also to “grow” with a mother’s abdomen as her pregnant belly expands.

Although some women can quite proudly claim they are able to wear their “normal” clothes when pregnant, for the majority this is just not the case. Most find that by around the second trimester, their clothes are getting too tight for comfort – especially in the tummy region.

In the first and second trimester of pregnancy, some women choose to fold their belly band in half because it doesn’t need to cover as much tummy area. But as their pregnancy advances, the band can be worn fully expanded. . As their tummy enlarges and it becomes difficult to do up the zip, clips or buttons, these can be left open and the belly band is worn over the top, covering the expanse of skin. They work like a “bridge” between where the top ends and where the pants or skirt start.

Some mothers find they are just a good fashion accessory and provide a different layering look. They can smooth the mid section and provide an alternative to monochromatic colour when dressing.

Belly bands are a great intermediate wardrobe item between not fitting into pre-pregnancy clothes and maternity clothing being too big. When maternity pants would otherwise be swimming on you, a belly band will help to hold them up. Likewise, in the first couple of months after your baby is born, you’re unlikely to fit back into your pre-pregnancy clothes. Belly bands can still be worn after birth.

Check out MotherLand’s range of belly bands, from a very affordable price of $14.95.

Winter Maternity Clothes

With your tempreature rising (literally) when you are pregnant you may be feeling a little confused when you are choosing maternity clothes at this time of the year. Although the cooler weather is upon us, we are experiencing really cold mornings that are turning into sunny days only to cool down again in the late afternoon. Choosing maternity clothes that you can layer is a great way for you to cool down quickly when the weather, or your tempreature rises. Wearing a knitted cardigan or maternity trench coat over your maternity outfit or with your favourite pair of maternity jeans allows you to cool down quickly if you need to. Wearing a long sleeve, stretchy maternity top underneath short sleeve maternity tops and tunics will also stretch your maternity clothing wardrobe further. They can then be easily removed during the middle of the day when the tempreature heats up. You can also wear long sleeve, stretchy maternity tops underneath short sleeve dresses or maternity leggins underneath maternity dresses. Leggings can easily be removed if you find you are getting too hot throughout the day. Motherland has a huge range of affordable maternity clothes to stretch your maternity fashion wardrobe and budget further. The girls at Motherland hope you enjoy your pregnancy and have fun dressing up your bump.

Maternity Fashion

Congratulations on your pregnancy ! Chances are that if you are reading this blog you have a baby on the way or a planning a pregnancy soon. We hope you have a lot of fun dressing up your bump during your pregnancy. Here are a few maternity fashion tips to help you extend your maternity clothing wardrobe and your budget further.

Maternity Tops - We recommend that you purchase some comfortable casual maternity tanks and tee's for those hot summer days during your pregnancy. As comfort is paramount during your pregnancy choosing maternity tee's that are made from natural fibres will help keep you feeling cooler, and as natural fibres absorb moisture a lot more effectively, you will ultimately feel a lot more comfortable during the warmer weather. Maternity tanks and tee's made from a stretchy cotton jersey or bamboo fabric are a great choice. You can easily mix and match them with your favourite pair of maternity jeans, shorts or maternity leggins. A light maternity tank is also a good choice to keep you nice and cool during your pregnancy if you are exercising.

If you are planning to breasfeed your baby choosing tops that are also designed for this purpose will allow you to save some money. Breastfeeding tops are very convenient for new mums on the run and will allow you to breastfeed discreetly in public places or when you have visitors dropping by.

Maternity Tunics - Maternity tunics with loud and colourful patterns will brighten up your bump. They look casually chic when paired with maternity jeans or maternity leggins. In winter they look great with a long sleeve maternity top underneath - they can be dresses up or down to suit the ocassion. Maternity tunics are also a good choice during the post pregnancy months whilst you are regaining your pre pregnancy shape.

Maternity Jeans - There is no doubt that most Australians love a comfortable, great looking pair of denim jeans. There is no reason why you should sacrifice your love of denim jeans during pregnancy. We recommend that you choose at least one pair of comfortable, sassy maternity jeans to wear throughout your pregnancy. Your maternity jeans will transcend seasons and looks as you mix and match them with your maternity tee's and tunics - you can dress them up with a cute pair of heels or boots or pair them with flats for casual outings.

Maternity Wrap Dresses -  Maternity wrap dresses are a versatile maternity fashion item. They can be dresses up or down and are suitable for the office. Short sleeve maternity wrap dresses can be worn with a long sleeve maternity top or turtleneck underneath during winter and can also be worn with leggings and boots.

Maternity Cargo Pants - Maternity cargo pants paired with a maternity tank or tee are perfect for casual summer outings during your pregnancy. If the weather is cooler you can wear them with a long sleeve maternity top or jumper.

Maternity Trench Coat - MotherLands maternity trenchcoat is a winner with the fashion editors at Cosmopolitan pregnancy and is our most popular item purchased internationally. A maternity trench looks great with jeans or over any maternity outfit. It will give you a chic, stylish look.

Maternity Belly Bands - Maternity belly bands are designed to extend the life of your regular pants and jeans once you discover you are pregnant. They are also useful for creating a layered look by extending the length of regular tops. They are also suitable to be worn as a boob tube on those long hot summer days when you are lazing aroung the house during your pregnancy. You can also use belly bands when you are breastfeeding, instead of a bra, to hold breast pads in place.

Maternity Sleepwear - A comfortable pair of maternity pyjamas or a maternity nightie is definately worth paying for. Once you have a comfortable pair of maternity pyjamas you will wonder how you lived without them. A basic maternity nightie, such as our basic maternity and breastfeeding nightie, is a good choice for the labour ward. A lightweight pair of maternity and breastfeeding pyjamas will increase your comfort at night and keep you cool. Maternity and breastfeeding sleepwear made from breathable, stretchy fabrics, such as a good quality cotton or bamboo jersey, will keep you comfortable when you are breastfeeding, a time when your body tempreature rises. These fabrics are also more efficient than synthetic fabrics at absorbing moisture.

Don't forget to pack some maternity and breastfeeding sleepwear in your hospital bag. MotherLand stocks a trendy, comfortable range of affordable maternity and breastfeeding pyjmas and nighties which make a great gift for your favourite mum to be.

The girls at MotherLand wish you the very best during your pregnancy. MotherLand is dedicated to providing a trendy range of affordable maternity clothes for mums to be everywhere !

Your Post Pregnancy Body

I was flicking through some magazines on the weekend and came across some photos of some celebrity mums looking fantastic in bikin's just a few months after giving birth. I sat there wondering how they did it - hours a day in the gym (a bit diffcult with a newborn baby), great genes or some fancy photoshopping. Maybe I was just feeling a bit envious ..... either way, it takes most of us a while to regain our pre-pregnancy bodies after giving birth. It took me about 5 months after my first baby, about 10 months after my second baby and I am still working on it 2 years after the birth of my third baby. Although I am back to my pre-pregnancy clothing size I do have to choose clothing styles that hide my muffin top.

For this reason, the MotherLand maternity clothing range has been designed with the post pregnancy body in mind. Our maternity clothing range is designed to cater to the changing shape of your body during pregnancy and also look great after your baby is born. Our maternity wrap dresses, evening maternity dresses and maternity sleepwear all look great post pregnancy too. Our maternity pants are available in a few different designs. Some have adjustable waistbands, others have belly bands attatched that can be worn over your bump or folded down and worn underneath, whilst others have a wide elasticwaistband that sits comfortably under your belly - all of which are suitable to be worn post pregnancy.

What's Your Maternity Clothing Style ?

Being pregnant can be a great excuse to experiment with fashion while you have fun dressing up your bump. We asked one of our customers to tell us about their maternity clothing style ....... I loved dressing up my bump during all of my pregnancies. I chose maternity dresses that I could dress up or down to stretch my maternity clothing budget further. I also felt more daring with my maternity clothes feeling great in more feminine styles, adding a few more frills than I would normally wear and I loved wearing bold, bright colours. I also chose maternity clothes that I thought would be suitable to wear post pregnancy as I knew it would take a while to regain my post pregnancy shape. I had an overwhelming desire to dress up my bump.

I purchased 2 pairs of maternity jeans. Jeans are such a staple in most peoples wardrobes so a great pair of comfortable maternity jeans are a must. I chose maternity jeans that had a belly band attached which I continued to wear for 3 or 4 moths after my baby was born. I just rolled the belly band down and they were really comfortable. I paired my maternity leggings with soft, stretchy maternity tanks and a maternity hoodie for exercising in and then wore them with long maternity tops and flats for shopping and casual outings. I also wore my maternity leggings under dresses with boots in winter. There are loads of ways to wear maternity leggings. I also transformed some of my summer maternity dresses into winter outfits by wearing a long sleeve maternity top underneath with my leggings and boots. My most versatile outfit was my short sleeve maternity wrap dress (which I still wear now). I wore it in summer with flats or heels and then I added a long sleeve turtleneck underneath in winter. I also bought a comfortable pair of maternity pyjamas which I really appreciated during my hospital stay when I was breastfeeding with guests dropping in.
